Becoming a real estate agent takes commitment. It is not an easy job. And because of the nature of the job real estate agents must be licensed. The state and the people you work for want to know that you are truly capable of doing an excellent job.

Preparing Ahead of Time

If you are still in high school or are not sure what your educational goals are you can prepare ahead. If becoming a real estate agent interests you at all take classes geared toward that career.

Good math and English skills are going to be necessary both on the job and on the licensing exam. If you have poor skills in these areas take classes that will bring you up to speed.

Written Exam Required

Good writing skills are critical, not only for the exam, but for your ability to communicate within an appropriate and competitive environment. You will be taking a written exam before a real estate licensing board. There is also a lot of esoteric paperwork involved in the real estate field.

Before you take the written exam it is expected that you have taken the required training. An accredited course of some kind will prepare you for the exam and teach you what you need to know.

Other Requirements

There are also classes or experience that you must have to make your licensing final. Some states require that these things be done before you take the written exam. Other states give you a certain amount of time upon passing the exam to complete the requirements.

Your license will have to be renewed periodically. It is not a one time deal. You will be expected to keep up with new laws and regulations in your area. Continuing education is often required before renewal. The renewal period varies from state to state so be sure and check with your local realtor’s board to determine when you need to renew.

People Skills

Although not a part of the exam, good people skills are necessary for the job of a real estate agent. Taking classes in speech and similar subjects will help you act professionally on the job. Knowing how to deal with people is a must in this business.
