Becoming a real estate agent, like any other career choice, requires planning and hard work. And while it may not take as long to become a real estate agent as it might to become a doctor or a lawyer there are still job requirements. You need to be sure it is what you want to do and then be prepared to put in the necessary time it takes to complete the requirements.

Real Estate Course

You will need to take a course designed for becoming a real estate agent. There are online courses and many local colleges offer such courses. Most states are going to require a certain amount of classroom time, too. There are laws, rules and regulations regarding real estate that the student is going to need to learn.

It is also possible to get a college degree in real estate. If your goal is to handle corporate or industry real estate this might be an option you want to consider.

Must be Licensed

In all fifty states you must be licensed to operate as a real estate agent. Anyone applying for a real estate license must be at least eighteen years old. They also have to go before the state licensing board and take a test.

The tests will consist of questions that cover everything from the English language to handling real estate transactions. You will need to be proficient at mathematical computation, besides knowing your obligations and what is required of you as a real estate agent. There is also a moral aspect to the job and prospective agents will need to be aware of what they cannot do as a real estate agent. Tests will vary from state to state. There is usually a fee for taking the real estate exam.

Licenses have to be renewed periodically. Depending on where you live it could be every two years or every four years. You will usually not have to repeat the test but in some states you must be continuing your education in the area of real estate in which you are licensed. Check your state laws to find out exactly what is required in your area.
