There are pros and cons to being totally self-employed in any career. Anyone considering going this route needs to carefully consider both sides of the issue before making a decision.

Be Your Own Boss

Independent real estate agents work for themselves. They often contract out to brokerage firms for buying and selling of property. Some actually work under the brokerage firm and receive a salary. Others work totally independently.

The benefits of being self employed are varied. You are in control of your time and career. There is no one telling when to punch a time card or what to do. As an independent real estate agent you decide how much work you are willing to take on. Another plus is you do not have to share commissions or pay checks with anyone except the IRS.

Things to Think About

Every issue has cons as well as pros. There are several things you will want to consider when deciding whether to work under someone else or be totally independent.

First off is the financial side. You will need to set up office space somewhere. You can probably start out in your home but you will still need to buy the basic necessities any office needs. There will be the cost of advertising to get your name out. All these things will be your responsibility if you decide to be an independent agent.

Being self employed requires commitment and hard work. You have to be willing to put in the time needed to get your career as a real estate agent rolling. Walking the neighborhoods, actively recruiting clients and seeking out business can involve twenty-four hour days.

If you are one of those people who spends half the day trying to get motivated to work, then being an independent agent is not going to work for you.

Earning a Paycheck

As an independent real estate agent you are responsible for your paycheck. And as stated earlier, you do not have to share your take with other agents. But you still have to bring in the clients that will provide the income. Decide how much you want to earn on a monthly basis and then set your goals for clients and work hours appropriately.
